Reconstruction of fire damaged site after the 2003 bushfires. Includes new buildings such as administration, learning centre, and residential cabins. It is a highly sustainable project that incorporates solar passive and active hydronic heating and cooling, natural ventilation active and passive, BMS control with weather station, grey water reuse, rainwater use with bore backup, and hydronic fireplaces in the administration building.
The site plan was generated as a seed growth pattern and the aim has been to sit comfortably within the natural surrounding landscape. Buildings have non combustible materials to help resist future fires and provide low maintenance.
Birrigai is used as both an education facility and general retreat for private and public organisations.
