Starting with a Master Plan, briefing, and feasibility study including concept design, this project included a review of facilities within the whole college plus surrounding area to establish the size and required facilities to be included in the new centre at St Mary MacKillop college in Tuggeranong. After this process the defined performing arts centre includes a multipurpose flat floor black box auditorium for drama, music and dance for up to 400 people. This is supported by other learning spaces such as a music classroom with practice rooms, recording facilities, specialist instrument storage area, flexible drama studio and green room, change rooms, dance studio, staff room, GPLA classroom, and large foyer for gathering and activities with breakout areas and servery. The whole building serves as a multipurpose creative arts hub.
Externally the new performing arts centre completes the arrival sequence at the college and provides a covered link through to the building entry that continues through to art and technology area or hub. The residual space between existing buildings becomes a discrete courtyard space with small amphitheatre and garden areas. The covered link and courtyard have the dual function of providing extra gathering area when large performances occur.
