This project had two phases, a proposal for a new building, then after a break a revised proposal for a fitout within an existing building. An extensive briefing period within the first phase helped to inform the fitout project. The collaborative brief called for an innovative departure from Canberra Institute of Technology’s ‘business-as-usual’ model delivering technology rich, open planned flexible spaces with a variety of settings to support innovation, creativity and collaboration in activity-based training and working spaces. A forward design was completed as part of this phase and pattern book of briefed educational elements and spaces.
When the project was changed to a fitout the essential patterns remained as the key design generators only the patterns related to outdoor spaces became irrelevant (although location to nearby outdoor spaces in the Tuggeranong town centre helped in the location of the new fitout). The Campus is situated within an existing building on the main street opposite the main Tuggeranong shopping precinct.
The Campus combines both flexible & specialist learning spaces for the delivery of vocational training. The campus includes 1260m2 of multi-use training and other specialist facilities such as a mock courtroom, a virtual activity-based office, hardware ICT training space, café and bar training, childcare and library services training. The spaces within the facility are inherently flexible and interchangeable. There are a number of zones that can be opened to adjoining areas providing opportunities for a range of training settings (including focussed team spaces, individual study and large group settings) as well as facilitating seminar and conference events.
