The College remained fully operational for the duration of the kitchen refurbishment works turning out meals for 240 residents, 3 times a day, every day (including the capacity to cater for 360 diners during special events). The updating of the obsolete kitchen facility involved a complete strip out of linings and services to allow for the insertion of a new ‘state-of-the-art’ commercial kitchen that met user requirements and allowed for a degree of flexibility and possible future expansion in resident numbers. Temporary catering arrangements for the 240 residents were accommodated as part of the construction phase, including a temporary commercial kitchen and servery located adjacent to a temporary dining facility within the Student Common Room. When completed the new kitchen, servery and student self-service area occupied the former enclosed kitchen space and was sensitively opened up to the existing, retained dining hall.
